Mediterranean Integration Orthodontic Project
The mission of the “Mediterranean Orthodontic Integration Project” is to build a “cultural bridge” between the northern and southern sides of the Mediterranean and to share orthodontic experiences in the different Countries, to facilitate the improvement both of the quality of educational programs and the standard of patients’care.
The first step in the project (December 2005, Cairo) was to organize a Workshop Meeting of the Orthodontic Associations in the area to analyze the future of Orthodontics and the possible future developments in education, to enhance existing programs and possibly harmonize curricula in the different environments. All Societies were invited to participate in the workshop and the participants agreed on the possibility of creating an “orthodontic culture” in the Mediterranean Area, by developing common programs, harmonizing training, exchanging students and teachers, working on common research programs and protocols. Such a goal can be gradually reached only by intensive discussions and careful planning, thus the need to hold regular meetings.
So far 20 Orthodontic Associations, representing 18 mediterranean Countries, have joined the network.
Presidents and Delegates of the participating Societies met in 2006 in Firenze and again in 2007 in Napoli and common plans were discussed. Various initiatives have been suggested and taskforces are working on creating a group of official MOIP speakers from the countries involved, on the release of a newsletter and the creation of a MOIP Award. The organization of other joint meetings to strengthen the bonds within the network is also being considered and many Associations have already volunteered to host the event in the future.
We look forward to welcoming all of our MOIP Colleagues, with the SIDO and SFODF Members, to a congress we hope will be the first of many meetings of this newly developed Network in the magic city of Venezia, “Regina del mare” (Queen of the Seas).
